Statement by Aiko Morioka I
often use the subtractionist method of sculpting in clay. My first teacher was an Italian stone
carver and it was natural for me to approach clay in the same manner. I start with a block of clay and often
spend hours twirling the clay around watching for the moment when the form
will appear. I am intrigued by the
surprise of evolving shapes and how a simple shadow becomes a story. The clay is symbolic of the self; malleable, constantly changing, locked
within...a potential awaiting manifestation.
It is the metamorphosis. The
caterpillar becoming the butterfly. |
