Statement by Aiko Morioka
A
secret door to hidden potential opened the first time I touched clay. I work intuitively and rarely have a plan,
but rather let my hands release the image concealed in the clay or stone. Nature, the human form and themes based in
ancient wisdom are a recurring inspiration and presence in my
sculptures. My figurative work can be
representational or take on an abstracted form as I endeavor to capture the
essence of the spirit and sculpt a message of wisdom. My abstract figures represent the need for
balance and are about the role we all have in bringing extremes into perspective. All of my work has a deeply internal and
meditative quality. I endeavor to
imbue each sculpture with a thought or
feeling. My hope is that my work will
illicit the same in the viewer and that their imaginations will create new
stories which are uniquely their own.
